I'm now moving into my seventh year of nomadic living and eighth year of teaching yoga and I've picked up a few tips along the way! I've been the chick who's carted a 3kg Liforme mat around Asia, gone to a 'vinyasa' yoga class only to discover I'm the only solo person in a couples only tantra workshop, I've been hit on mid handstand by sweaty guys with man buns and ripped the entire crotch of my yoga pants mid teaching.  It's safe to say I've seen some questionable things but there is nothing more awesome than unrolling your mat in a beautiful tropical country. For those inevitable times in life when something unexpected happens, when we're challenged in the most profound of ways or even if we're just feeling a little unsettled we can allow the practice of yoga to do what it's really designed for ... to connect us to what is true, and move through challenges with grace.

Gratitude Journalling

For those of you who have been on retreat with me, you know the power of the mighty gratitude journal! To make it work for 5 minutes of zen, kick off your shoes, brew your favourite tea, curl up on a big cushion with a beautiful note book and simply write down 3-5 things you are grateful for today. If nothing comes immediately focus on the miracle of having a roof over your head food in your belly, a healthy body, people who love you ... it's so easy to forget these...

Pace Yourself

Slow down turbo ... you're here all week! I know it's exciting and you want to nail your headstand, meditate like the buddha, achieve enlightenment and find the secret to world peace in 7 days but remember to check into your energy levels during the week ;) Remember you're here to renew, revitalise and reflect as well as to rock it. I often say, the most advanced practitioner is not the one in the front doing the handstands, it's the yogi who assesses where she is anew every time she steps on her mat and responds intuitively to nurture herself through yoga. If that means going half as deep in a yin class because you're sore or skipping a few chaturangas ... go for it ... there are no yoga police here....

I've come to realise recently that travelling has provided me with as many life lessons as my yoga journey. The two are so intertwined that they merge into one. I finished my retreat in Goa literally two hours ago and now I'm zooming up to Denpasar airport dressed in harem pants and long sleeved shirt to spend 5 days in an Indian ashram. Our programme begins at 5.30am tomorrow morning. Hmmm. 

I'm beginning to question which part of me thought this would be a 'relaxing' way to spend a few days after three months of full power teaching but here I am, armed with the only 'covered up' clothes I own and and armful of jumpers for those early morning meditations.
